The importance of the English Language in the life of a Nigerian cannot be overemphasized. Also, the power of imagination and creativity is innate; therefore, the English and Literary Studies Department plays a major role in the lives of its students and staff at Babcock University Schools, Ogba, Lagos.
The Department, which was formerly in the Arts and Humanities Department, was carved out in the year 2015 to emphasize the importance of the English Language in the School. This great stride saw Mrs Nwosu Nkechi emerging as the pioneer Head of the Department and she led the Department to achieve great feats. This mantle of leadership, in 2017, was passed down to Mrs Eneogwe Ijeoma, who continued in her footsteps and later to Mrs Obot Ngozi G. for the 2022/2023 to 2024/2025 academic sessions. Currently, the Department has Mr Ariguzo Chibuike as the Head of Department for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The English and Literary Studies Department of Babcock University Schools, Ogba, offers subjects like English Studies at the junior level of the secondary school, English Language and Literature-in-English at the senior level. These subjects are handled by efficient, accomplished and certified teachers with graduate and post-graduate degrees from distinguished and eminent universities in the country. The Department has programmes that focus on grammar usage and articulate speech.
It aims at developing communication ability and instilling eloquence in the students to produce functional members of society. It also aims at building the imaginative and creative ability of a child towards creating an economically and financially self-reliant individual and society. The record of the Department’s achievements cannot be written off as it prides itself on having excellent results in both subjects right from the inception of the School and Department.
